Review: The Cruel Prince by Holly Black (Spoiler-Free)

I’m shook. There is no other way to properly describe how blown away I am by this book. I think I forgot what a good YA fantasy was and now I’ve found the peak of them. I have kind of been leaning away from fantasy lately because sometimes it feels a bit repetitive or the books are really long, but this, this was perfect. I don’t even know how to begin to describe how much I loved this book. Like everything was amazing, from the characters, to the pacing, the political intrigue, and the world building. There were so many plot twists, and all of them were the good kind that made sense, not the kind that are just thrown in for an element of surprise. They were all explained, and had really good foreshadowing to back them up, and for you to get annoyed at yourself for not figuring it out sooner. Also there’s very little romance, which I am a fan of, especially in the first book of a series. This allowed me to really get to know and love our main character, Jude. Also, the plot was AWESOME. Like pacing never felt off, and the chapter length was perfect as well. And, to add on to all of this awesome stuff, there is also PoC rep and lgbtq+ rep! Somebody please build me a time machine so I can get the next book right now.

Song I was reminded of while reading: Control
