Review: The Summer of Broken Rules by K. L. Walther (Spoiler-Free)

I read the majority of this book while it stormed outside, pretending that I too have a huge family that summers in Martha's Vineyard with cute boys my age. Basically, it was the perfect summer getaway.

If you're a fan of the vibes of The Summer I Turned Pretty but also died a little inside every time Conrad spoke (not in a good way), then you need to give this one a try!! It has some of the best beach house descriptions I've ever read and it made me long for a place I've never been.

The story itself is also really well done—it hits every beat it needs to and does it through the entertaining angle of an Assassin tournament. Yes, the "twists" are predictable, but they accomplish what they need to and lead to third act conflict that is less frustrating than usual (yay!).

The characters in this book are also so sweet. I wish we got more of Eli! That being said, our main couple is precious. I don't love when a romance takes place over a short time, but something about the set-up in this book worked. #HitchMeToWitry was just that convincing.

I wanted a quick summer read to sweep me off my feet and away from the perpetual grayness of the northeast, and The Summer of Broken Rules delivered exactly what I was looking for. Now I just need to keep an eye out for any guys I can accidentally kick in the face ;)

P.S. It gets 17 bonus points for mentioning Timothée Chalamet three separate times.
