My immediate reaction to finishing this short story: ummmmm yeah need more of that.
I don't know how Sally Rooney does it. Her observations on the human psyche are scathing. Absolutely humiliating. And yet she pours them onto the page like it's easy.
They hated each other and I mediated their mutual hatred in a way that made me feel successfully feminine.
Like her novels, this story revolves around the unspoken. An unhinged dynamic with undeniable sexual tension. The whole tale lives there, really. In the "un" of everything.
Wish it was longer of course, but I think that's the whole point.
